That Ancient Cave

Sinking down to dusky depths,
Behind locked doors and iron chains.

Wading past pools of regret,
Past shaking heads and angry sighs.

Tripping over cracks and bumps;
It took so long to stand back up.

I stayed in there, that ancient cave,
For as long as I could bear.

But a glowing sun behind the fog
Would peak its head from time to time,

And as the road began to clear
Of dust and broken dreams and such,

New memories would take their place.

The sky was blue again as well,
Except occasional midnight storms,

And so a frown turned upside down;
to something quite like sweet delight.
